Nationality Criteria: The first consideration is in terms of the nationality of a candidate. Any candidate who fails to meets this criteria is not eligible for the mentioned posts in the official notification. As per the guidelines of UPSC, a candidate must be one of the following:

a) A citizen of India;

b) A subject of Nepal;



c) A person of Indian origin, who resided in East African nation such as Zambia, Zaire, Malawi, etc., or in Indian sub-continent such as Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Burma etc., and intends to settle down in India on a permanent basis;

d) A descendant of a Tibetan Refugee, whose ancestors crossed into the Indian border before 1962 (counted from January 1), and is currently residing in India on a permanent basis;

e) A Subject of Bhutan;

UPSC CDS Exam Age Limit: The second criteria relates to the age limit for a candidate. Since, the CDS exam offers various types of posts, the age limit differs with every post. Here is the complete discussion in such regard.

a) For INA (Indian Naval Academy) – Candidates who have applied for the post of Indian Naval Academy should be born in between July 2, 1994 to July 1, 1999 (both dates inclusive). Additionally, the candidate should be unmarried.

b) For IMA– Candidates who applied for IMA related posts should be unmarried and born in between July 2, 1994 to July 1, 1999 (inclusive of both dates).

c) For AFA (Air Force Academy) – Candidates who have applied for the Air Force Academy should be between 20 years to 24 years as on 1-1-2018. Born not earlier than 2 January 1994 and not later than 1 January 1998.

In case, a candidate is holds a current Commercial Pilot License, the age relaxation of 2 years is available. The candidates are expected to be unmarried.

UPSC CDS Exam Minimum Educational Qualification: The most important criteria for the candidates is the educational qualification. The following completes the criteria for education.

a) For IMA – Bachelor’s degree from a recognized Institute or University.

b) For INA – A degree in Engineering from a recognized Institute or University.

c) For AFA – A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or degree of Class 10 + 2 with Physics and Mathematics from a recognized Institute/ University.

Satisfying the above mentioned criteria will qualify a candidate to apply for the CDS Exam 2017. In case, a candidate does not satisfies any of the above mentioned criteria, he can apply for the exam, but will not be considered during the later stages of selection.
