  • Tony Atkinson, noted British Economist, passes away
  • He passed away in January in Oxford, UK.
  • He was a professor from LSE (London School of Economics).
  • Tony was popular for his research across income distribution field.
  • It influrnced the studies of inequality & poverty in India.
  • He has been British Academy & Econometric Society fellow.
  • Tony is also associated with EEA, IEA & RES (Royal Economic Society).
  • His main area of study has been Public Economics.
  • He has also been JPE (Journal of Public Economics) editor.
  • The ‘Atkinson Index’ has been named after Tony Atkinson.
  • Oxford University prepared this Index.


MoU approved with Kenya by Union Cabinet

  • Union Cabinet approved agreement with Kenya.
  • MoU is on agriculture & allied sectors.
  • It was approved by Cabinet on 4th January 2017.
  • The MoU covers various sectors in the agriculture field.
  • This MoU is applicable for a five year period.
  • Some are Agricultural research, Dairy, Animal Husbandry etc.
  • Others are Horticulture, Soil & Conservation, and Water Management etc.
  • It also includes Sanitary & phytosanitary issues in this sector.
  • A JWC (joint working group) will be established under this MoU.
  • It will be for developing the complete cooperation programmes.
  • Kenya belongs to the East-African area.
  • Indian western coast & East-African coast are linked with trade.
  • This trade & investment partnership has grown over recent years.


World Bank & India discussed on IWT (Indus Water Treaty)

  • World Bank & India discussed on IWT (Indus Water Treaty).
  • The discussion was held on 5th January 2017.
  • Objective was resolving gridlock between Pakistan & India.
  • This gridlock is over building of Ratle & Kishenganga HPP
  • These hydro power projects are to be built in J&K.
  • IWT is a water-distribution treaty between Pakistan & India.
  • World Bank Group’s IBRD brokered this treaty.
  • Water sharing of Indus River between two nations is managed by IWT.
  • India planned to build two HPPs on the River Indus.
  • This project has been objected by Pakistan.
  • WB appointed Neutral Expert & CoA (Court of Arbitration) under IWT.


INR 1782 crore assistance given to drought-hit Karnataka

  • Drought-hit Karnataka has received INR 1782 assistance.
  • Union Government approved the grant on 5th January 2016.
  • It was approved under NDRF (National Disaster Relief Fund).
  • It came after Karnataka Govt’s request for INR 4702 crore relief.
  • This relief was requested after 2016 Kharif-crop loss due to drought.
  • Centre also approved INR 209 crore assistance to Uttarakhand.
  • This assistance was for the floods that hit the state in 2013.
  • Decision was announced during a HLC (High Level Committee) meeting.
  • Rajnath Minister (Union Home Minister) presided this meeting.
  • Inter-ministerial teams visited these affected this states.
  • Teams prepared proposal that was reviewed in this meeting.
  • Karnataka is facing drought from last 6 years.
